Peak fall colors have arrived at First Landing State Park showcasing bright oranges and reds throughout the park. This is an excellent time to enjoy the fall colors, as they will be at or near their peak by the weekend, which is expected to have sunny skies and temperatures in the mid-60s. However, the storm that moved through the area on Tuesday and Wednesday may result in some loss of leaves, potentially reducing the overall color.

Peak fall colors have arrived at First Landing, showcasing vibrant oranges and reds throughout the park. The best spots for easy access and stunning colors are around the Bald Cypress Trail, but there is also plenty of beautiful foliage on both Long Creek and Osmanthus trails. Most of the bald cypress trees have turned a full orange, and other species like tulip poplars and sweetgums have also undergone a complete color change. The fall colors at First Landing State Park continue to emerge all around the park, with deepening color in the canopies. Look for the vibrant orange tops on the bald cypress trees over the next week as they work themselves toward their peak color. At the same time, you can find sweetgum trees and blackgum trees starting their vibrant turn to scarlet red. Around the Trail Center and Bald Cypress Trail remain the best spots to see color, with Osmanthus Trail and Cape Henry also starting to show areas of color. Even though the weather has been a bit wet and windy these past weeks, the fall colors have held on strong and will continue to become more vibrant over the next two weeks. This weekend presents a perfect opportunity to view the colors, with mostly clear skies and warm temperatures coinciding with First Landing State Park's Fall Fest on Saturday.

The weather has started to cool, signaling the arrival of fall at First Landing. Despite a dry summer, the fall colors are beginning to emerge at the top of the canopy and are gradually working their way down. You'll also notice small, isolated areas in the understory that are starting to change color. A walk along the Cape Henry Extension Trail will reveal some of these scattered pockets of color. Alternatively, you can take a stroll on the Bald Cypress Loop to look up into the canopy and observe the early changes in the bald cypress and water tupelo trees.
