Wavy hairgrass (Avenella flexuosa) is a characteristic grass in the Northern Type of Central Appalachian shale barren.  Here, it grows in a barren subtending the South Fork Shenandoah River near Bentonville, Warren County.  Shenandoah River State Park. © DCR-DNH, Gary P. Fleming
