A dry but diverse stand of basic oak-hickory forest on a slope underlain by mafic metavolcanic rocks along the headwaters of the Appomattox River.  Dominants include white oak (Quercus alba), shagbark hickory (Carya ovata), and Bosc's panic grass (Dichanthelium boscii).  Larkspur coreopsis (Coreopsis auriculata) is flowering in the foreground.  Appomattox Court House National Historical Park, Appomattox County. © DCR-DNH, Gary P.
